Passport Golf Clinic Provides Instant Access to Instruction

A Passport golf clinic was recently conducted as appreciation for its current members. Presented by local Executive Director and Regional NGCOA Representative Tracy Conner, and conducted by Dale Ketola, Director of Instruction and Club Fitting at Grande Dunes Golf Performance Center, the Passport golf clinic was both informative and fun for the entire group.

Dale discussed pre-swing fundamentals with a full crowd of about 20 students; topics included where the clubface should be in the swing, proper grip, posture, balance, how golfers should learn a skill, make changes in a swing over time and how to practice with a purpose. There was a lot of information passed onto willing students!

Where the first part of the golf clinic focused on the basics, part two was dynamic, with students set-up at bays, hitting golf balls while Dale observed each and every golfer, helping them overcome their most obvious errors.

Everyone who attended learned something new about their golf swing and what is needed in order to improve their golf game.

After the golf clinic, the group met in the clubhouse for a question and answer session conducted by Dale as well as a cold drink.

Keep an eye out for our next golf clinic! Contact Dale Ketola directly for private lessons, group lessons and for club fitting assistance.

What Makes Good Golf Teaching Professionals Successful?

Dale Ketola Golf Teaching Professionals Seminar at Grande Dunes

At a recent seminar for teaching professionals, Grande Dunes Golf Performance Center‘s Director of Instruction and Club Fitting, Dale Ketola, discussed ways in which good golf teaching professionals can become more successful in his or her chosen field.

“You have to build a relationship with the student, ask questions, find out why he or she wants to improve and make a plan showing how it’s going to happen,” said Ketola. “And, have the golfer bring a notebook to write down lessons so he or she can refer to the lesson on the driving range or at home.

Make it easy for students to learn and want to continue their relationship with you,” advised Ketola.

Dale also offered business tips such as how a teaching professional can better understand a student’s learning curve, how to overcome barriers, when and how to use video during instruction,  and how to determine whether or not a student needs new clubs or a swing adjustment.

The most compelling part of the seminar examined common mistakes made by instructors when trying to start a business and how to look at a business in a completely different way.

Dale suggested that advertising methods should focus more on the “why” and not the “what”, drawing inspiration from Ted Talk speaker, Simon Sinek, about how great leaders inspire action.

Following the model of the “golden circle” and starting with “why” your business exists, then following with “how” your business fulfills its core belief and then finally discussing “what” your business does, can help teaching professionals to gain a following.

People don’t necessarily buy what you do – they buy your passion and will align themselves with your core values…powerful stuff!

Dale will be holding another teaching seminar for professional instructors – future dates are being arranged. If you would like Dale to speak at your next business conference, contact him through this grandedunesgolfperformance.com website.

Elite Golf Performance Center Set To Open In Myrtle Beach In February 2017

Founders Group International is opening The Golf Performance Center at Grande Dunes Resort Golf Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C. this February. The elite facility will be designed to benefit the golfer by being able to fit him or her with the best equipment and improve their games with instruction.

Led by Director of Instruction and Club Fitting Dale Ketola, instruction will use Flightscope radar technology that tracks the golf ball in its entire flight, as well as high-speed cameras, analyzation software, and other technology. Instructors will also use Flightscope to determine the best equipment for each particular golfer with TaylorMade, Callaway, and US Kids fitting equipment. Golf Digest awarded Flightscope the video analysis award in 2016.

Ketola is a Class-A PGA Professional who trained under Allen Terrell at Coastal Carolina University, the same coach who trained current U.S. Open Champion Dustin Johnson. While in college, Ketola was named twice to the Big South All-Conference Team. Mentored by two of the best-known golf instructors in Andrew Rice and Dr. Jim Suttie, Ketola has now been teaching for 15 years. He’s a certified club fitter with many different vendors, including TaylorMade. Ketola previously worked as the Certified Lead Instructor at Greg Norman Champions Golf Academy in Longs, S.C. In 2015, he qualified for the PGA Professional National Championship.

“Dale has a gift for golf and a passion for learning all he can about the game,” said Steve Mays, director of marketing and sales for Founders Group International. “We were impressed with his philosophy and his dedication to help other golfers thrive.“

Ketola’s philosophy revolves around sound technique, proper equipment, and the right attitude on the course. That’s why he’ll be joined by Dr. Bhrett McCabe, a sports and performance psychologist and licensed clinical phychologist. Dr. McCabe currently works with numerous players from the PGA and LPGA Tours.

“You have to have technique down before you get on the course,” said Ketola. “If you’re thinking about your swing, you’re not going to score well. We want to make sure you’re confident in your skills before you get out there. That’s what this performance center is all about, building confidence so golfers can keep their head in the game.”

“I really enjoy learning about new techniques and watching other great teachers in action in order to share the love and enjoyment I get from the game,” said Ketola. “I started playing at 10 years old. Learning how the greats became great has always been a fascination of mine.”

The performance center is set to open in February at Grand Dunes Resort Golf Club in Myrtle Beach. The 18-hole course is positioned on a high bluff creating a spectacular view of the Intracoastal Waterway, Grande Dunes Marina and the four-diamond resort, Marina Inn at Grande Dunes. The course has received numerous accolades over the years, including National Golf Course of the Year by the National Golf Course Owners Association. Both the fitting and the instruction bays will be on the driving range at Grande Dunes.
